In a significant development for international relations, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin have committed to extending the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation. This decision surfaced during their discussions at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, coinciding with Putin’s two-day state visit to China. The leaders underscored their determination to enhance political trust, strategic coordination, and practical cooperation as the world navigates a complex international landscape.

During their meeting, Xi and Putin signed a joint statement to advance comprehensive strategic coordination and deepen the bonds of good-neighborliness. They also signed 20 cooperation documents covering areas such as the economy, trade, education, and technology. Additionally, the two nations issued a joint statement advocating for a multipolar world and new types of international relations. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the China-Russia strategic partnership, reaching an unprecedented level in history as a comprehensive strategic partnership for a new era.

The historic meeting also coincides with the 25th anniversary of the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, which was last extended in June 2021. Xi highlighted that the two countries have adhered to the treaty’s principles of non-alliance and non-confrontation, contributing significantly to international fairness and justice. He called for further support on issues of core interest and emphasized the necessity of strategic communication and cooperation.

Trade between China and Russia has flourished, with bilateral trade surpassing $200 billion for three consecutive years. This robust economic partnership is set to deepen as both countries align China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) with Russia’s development strategy through 2030. Xi stressed the importance of leveraging cooperation mechanisms to enhance trade, investment, energy, and technological innovation, while fostering cultural and educational exchanges to bolster public support.

Putin, warmly received with a 21-gun salute, expressed confidence in the future of China-Russia relations, noting their self-sufficiency and resilience amid global challenges. He emphasized the importance of collaboration within international frameworks such as the UN, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and BRICS. Both leaders exchanged views on pressing global issues, including the Middle East conflict, advocating for peace and stability. In a gesture of goodwill, China and Russia have extended visa-free policies for each other’s citizens, further cementing their bilateral ties.
