Vietnam has underscored its pivotal role in fostering cooperation between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia, following the commemorative summit celebrating 35 years of dialogue between the two entities. The event, which took place recently, saw Vietnam making notable contributions that helped highlight ASEAN’s central position while bolstering efforts to enhance the strategic partnership with Russia. Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung emphasized Vietnam’s integral part in the summit’s success.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, the Vietnamese delegation advocated for dialogue, cooperation, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, while also stressing the importance of adhering to international law. Vietnam proposed expanding collaboration in critical sectors such as energy, trade, transportation connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These areas were identified as key for furthering the partnership between ASEAN and Russia, particularly as energy emerged as a major focus of this cooperation.
The summit concluded with the adoption of new frameworks designed to enhance ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030. A significant part of this future collaboration will revolve around energy, establishing it as a cornerstone of the partnership. Demonstrating its ongoing commitment to regional cooperation, Vietnam announced its plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027, a move aimed at nurturing future diplomatic ties.
On the sidelines of the summit, Prime Minister Hưng engaged in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to deepening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, with conversations concentrating on expanding joint efforts in energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transportation.
The outcomes of the summit are expected to significantly bolster ASEAN–Russia relations, enhancing regional stability and opening up new avenues for economic growth and cooperation throughout the Eurasian region. Vietnam’s active participation and proposals during the summit have positioned it as a key player in driving this collaborative momentum forward.
