Discomfort or pain during urination or ejaculation can also signal prostate problems and should be taken seriously if persistent. A more alarming symptom is the presence of blood in urine or semen, which necessitates prompt medical attention as it could be linked to prostate cancer or other significant health concerns.
In the disease’s advanced stages, the cancer may metastasize beyond the prostate, causing continuous pain in areas such as the hips, spine, or chest, along with unexplained weight loss or sudden erectile dysfunction. Experts caution that while these symptoms can be indicative of non-cancerous conditions like an enlarged prostate or a prostate infection, only a thorough medical evaluation can confirm the exact cause and exclude cancer.
Men are advised to seek medical advice if they encounter persistent urinary changes, pelvic discomfort, or any of the aforementioned warning signs. Visible blood in urine or semen, sudden inability to urinate, or severe back or pelvic pain accompanied by leg weakness or numbness warrants emergency medical care. Regular screening is crucial, with men at average risk encouraged to discuss prostate cancer screening, including the PSA blood test, with their healthcare provider around age 50. Those with a close family history of the disease might consider initiating these discussions earlier, around age 45.
