The gathering, known as the Coalition of the Willing, is spearheaded by Britain, France, and Germany, with additional European leaders participating remotely. EU Council President Antonio Costa is also in attendance to lend his support to the discussions.
The meeting comes as Ukrainian cities, including Kyiv, face an escalating barrage of missile attacks from Russia. These strikes have resulted in civilian casualties and significant damage to residential areas, prompting urgent calls from Ukraine for enhanced air-defense systems and interceptor missiles from its allies. As the situation becomes increasingly dire, European nations are exploring ways to fulfill these requests and ensure the safety of the Ukrainian population.
Among the expected announcements, Britain is poised to reaffirm its backing for Ukraine, while France is set to initiate local production of the long-range SCALP missile. Additionally, France has committed to supplying more interceptor missiles, a critical component in reinforcing Ukraine’s air defenses against the ongoing threat. These efforts underscore Europe’s determination to stand firm against Russian aggression and support Ukraine’s sovereignty.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has highlighted a concerning decline in the delivery of Patriot interceptor missiles. While Ukraine received 675 such missiles in 2023, the numbers are projected to decrease significantly, with only 364 in 2025 and 264 anticipated for 2026. In anticipation of the upcoming winter season, Kyiv is making a pressing appeal for at least 300 interceptors to fortify its defenses.
As Ukraine continues to rely heavily on advanced Western air-defense systems to counter Russian ballistic missiles, which are notoriously difficult to intercept, its European allies are actively seeking ways to enhance supplies.
