The foreign ministers of Russia and Germany have engaged in their first talks since the onset of the Ukraine conflict, meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his German counterpart Johann Wadephul discussed bilateral relations and the ongoing war in Ukraine, highlighting a rare moment of direct dialogue amidst continued tensions between the two nations.

During the discussions, German officials reiterated Berlin’s stance on the conflict in Ukraine, underscoring their support for Kyiv. Wadephul emphasized the need for a ceasefire and encouraged negotiations aimed at establishing a lasting peace. This meeting signifies a pivotal moment, as it is the first interaction between the two countries’ foreign ministers since Lavrov’s last meeting with a German minister in January 2022, prior to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The talks also addressed broader issues affecting Russian-German relations, which have been strained by recent accusations. Germany has alleged that Russia attempted to target two cargo planes at Leipzig airport in August using a drone loaded with explosives. Such allegations have contributed to the heightened tensions between Berlin and Moscow.

The meeting between Lavrov and Wadephul reflects a cautious step towards dialogue despite the ongoing discord. Germany’s call for a ceasefire and pursuit of negotiations indicates a desire to find a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, while also maintaining pressure on Russia regarding its actions in Ukraine.
