Google is gearing up to enhance its Google Maps service in South Korea by introducing full navigation capabilities, including turn-by-turn directions. This development follows the South Korean government’s conditional approval for the export of high-precision map data, paving the way for a significant upgrade in the service’s functionality within the country.
To facilitate this expansion, Google is actively seeking to hire a senior Strategic Partnerships Development Manager in Seoul. This role will focus on collaborating with Korean businesses, public institutions, and technology partners, as part of Google’s strategy to establish a strong local team dedicated to expanding its Maps service.
Currently, Google Maps in South Korea offers features such as place listings, user reviews, and public transit information. However, it lacks the turn-by-turn driving or walking navigation that is available in other regions. The impending rollout of these features is set to intensify competition with local mapping services including Naver Map and Kakao Map, which are already popular among South Korean users.
The South Korean government granted approval for the export of high-precision map data in February, but this came with specific conditions attached. Previous attempts by Google to secure this data had been thwarted due to national security concerns. This development marks a significant step forward for Google in expanding its services in the region.
While Google has yet to disclose a specific launch date or a comprehensive list of new features, the company is expected to collaborate with local data providers. This partnership aims to enhance various aspects of the service, including mapping accuracy, traffic updates, address details, parking availability, and public transportation information.
