During the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Russian President Vladimir Putin turned down Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s suggestion for a personal meeting to further peace negotiations. Putin dismissed Zelenskyy’s recent letter that proposed a meeting in a neutral location such as Switzerland or Turkey, arguing that he currently sees “no point” in direct dialogue. Zelenskyy had aimed to initiate diplomatic talks starting from the present frontlines and called for a complete ceasefire during these discussions.

Putin reiterated that Russia’s goals in its military campaign in Ukraine remain consistent. He noted that Russian forces have established control over the entire Luhansk region and a significant portion of the Donetsk region. Additionally, he restated Moscow’s demand for Ukraine to surrender control over the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. In response to Putin’s stance, Zelenskyy criticized the Kremlin for opting to prolong the conflict rather than seeking a peaceful resolution, suggesting that the refusal to meet highlights Russia’s disinterest in ending the hostilities.

Amid these diplomatic tensions, Ukraine has escalated its military efforts against Russian targets, focusing on military and energy infrastructure. Recent actions have included drone strikes on ports, cargo ships, and fuel facilities. Russia has acknowledged these attacks and announced plans to bolster its air defense systems in response to the increased threats.

Despite the ongoing conflict and international sanctions, Putin defended Russia’s economic resilience, asserting that the nation remains robust in the face of economic challenges and financial restrictions from Western countries. He dismissed criticisms about the economic impact of the war, maintaining that the Russian economy can withstand the pressures imposed by the international community.
