Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a stern warning following the United States’ decision to pause the implementation of new sanctions against Russia. He expressed concerns that this move, under the administration of US President Donald Trump, could embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin, potentially prolonging the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy criticized the suspension of sanctions, describing it as a concession to Moscow. He argued that reducing economic pressure would undermine efforts to resolve the conflict and urged the US to reconsider its position. Additionally, he called on European nations to engage diplomatically with Russia to maintain pressure.
The proposed sanctions were set to impose additional restrictions on Russia’s energy sector, financial institutions, and oil transportation network. They also included potential tariffs of up to 100% on major importers of Russian oil, such as China and India. However, the Trump administration opted to pause these measures for 60 days to assess their potential impact on the global economy and American interests. This decision has been met with approval from Russian officials but has raised alarm in Kyiv regarding the US’s commitment to maintaining pressure on Moscow.
The context of Zelenskyy’s criticism is Russia’s escalating attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as winter approaches. These attacks have reportedly damaged over 15 significant electricity generation and transmission facilities, raising fears of power shortages and the challenges Ukrainian cities face in maintaining essential services.
Zelenskyy highlighted the increased strain on Ukraine’s air defense systems, which are struggling to intercept missiles and drones amid the intensified assaults. He emphasized the need for continued international support to protect critical infrastructure and civilian populations.
Additionally, Zelenskyy expressed concern over restrictions affecting Starlink satellite internet services used by Ukrainian forces, noting that these limitations were disrupting some military operations, including those involving drones.
The situation underscores growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv concerning sanctions, military support, and strategies to end the war. Zelenskyy insists that sustained pressure on Russia is essential for achieving lasting peace, cautioning that easing restrictions while attacks persist could extend the conflict.
