Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is urging for direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, suggesting a neutral third country as the venue to initiate talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict. In an open letter to Putin, Zelenskyy proposed locations such as Switzerland, Turkey, or an Arab nation for the meeting, emphasizing that pivotal decisions regarding the war can only be achieved through direct leadership dialogue. He stressed the importance of setting a specific date for these crucial discussions.
As part of his initiative, Zelenskyy has expressed Ukraine’s readiness to enact a complete ceasefire during the negotiation period. He also proposed an all-inclusive prisoner exchange as an initial step to build confidence between the two nations. Furthermore, he highlighted the need for the return of Ukrainian civilians and children who were taken from conflict-affected areas.
The call for negotiations comes amid ongoing military actions from both sides. Russia has been escalating its aerial strikes on Ukraine, while Ukraine has responded with long-range drone attacks that reach far into Russian territory. Despite the continuous hostilities, Zelenskyy’s proposal aims to create a diplomatic path forward.
Meanwhile, former US President Donald Trump expressed support for the idea of a meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian leaders. He noted that reaching a settlement would necessitate compromises from both parties involved. The Kremlin has acknowledged receipt of Zelenskyy’s proposal, with Russian officials confirming that Putin is aware of the message, though they have yet to conduct a detailed review of the suggested plan.
