In a notable upward trend, SK Eternix, a key player in the renewable energy sector under the umbrella of South Korea’s SK Group, has seen its stock soar by an impressive 114% over the past month. This surge in share value is largely attributed to heightened investor confidence, spurred by the anticipated expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, which is expected to significantly boost the demand for renewable energy. As of Friday, the company’s stock reached 80,900 won (about US$55.35), marking a substantial increase compared to its value a month earlier. This upward movement comes despite a 20.9% decrease in the benchmark Kospi index and a 31.2% decline in shares of SK hynix, SK Group’s prominent semiconductor division.
The recent rally in SK Eternix shares gathered momentum this week, with a notable 44.9% rise over the past five trading days. This growth has been fueled by institutional investors acquiring a net 106.8 billion won in shares, complemented by foreign investors purchasing a net 79 billion won. Market analysts attribute this robust performance to the growing expectations that AI data centers, known for their high electricity consumption, will sustain long-term demand for renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the South Korean government’s ongoing initiatives to increase clean energy capacity have bolstered investor confidence in the sector.
In June, the government outlined projections that major industrial developments, including AI data centers and semiconductor manufacturing hubs, would contribute an additional 39.7 gigawatts to the country’s electricity demand. Alongside this, the government reaffirmed its ambitious target to expand South Korea’s renewable energy capacity to 100 gigawatts by the year 2030. This governmental support for renewable energy aligns with the market’s optimism and reinforces the strategic importance of SK Eternix’s operations in the clean energy domain.
Adding to the positive sentiment surrounding SK Eternix is its forthcoming 2 trillion won renewable energy joint venture with global private equity firm KKR. This partnership is poised to accelerate the company’s growth trajectory within the clean energy sector, further enhancing its appeal to investors. The collaboration reflects SK Eternix’s strategic focus on scaling its renewable energy initiatives, positioning itself as a leading force in the transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
